"It's the police's job to protect me."

No, it isn't. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, the police have no specific responsibility to protect anyone. Further, the police can't and shouldn't be everywhere at once. Before you call for more police protection, look at these items:

Police are as fallible and variable as the rest of us. Most are good people in complex situations who make the best spot decisions they can while adrenalized and underinformed. Then there are the Mark Fuhrmanns and Justin Volpes.
