Guns were involved in 7 deaths in Memphis in the last two days...

Thousands of Mid-Southerners are exercising their right to bear arms. In 2001, Shelby County issued and renewed a total of 7 thousand 6 hundred 48 gun permits. But guns that were misused or obtained illegally made a shocking contribution to the state crime rate. In the same year, guns were used in 18 thousand and 93 crimes statewide. In more than 13 thousand cases the weapon of choice was a handgun.

ATF Youth Crime Gun Trace Report (1999) to be Released for Memphis, Tennessee and Other Cities. ATF's Data Available On-line

  • 35% of Memphis crime guns had a time-to-crime of less than 3 years (32% for comparable YCGII cities)
  • 15% of Memphis crime guns had a time-to-crime of a year or less (15% for comparable YCGII cities)
  • Handguns with obliterated serial numbers were more likely to be recovered from juveniles 17 and under than youth or adults
  • Handguns made up 80% of crime guns traced in Memphis
  • 58% of Memphis crime guns traced came from Tennessee Federal firearm licensees (FFLs) of which the majority were located within Shelby County
